Jeff says:

My son likes pork, the other white meat.

We tried some new toys on him today. We have a set of six soft blocks with a different animal in each block. His favorites were the blue dog, the penguin, and the pig, the latter of which spent most of its time in his mouth today.

We also met with his doctor and confirmed that he is indeed a product of Uralsk. He was born to a Russian mother in a hospital here in town. We know nothing of his father's background or identity, but given his appearance, we find it unlikely that he was a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Russian. Alex' given patronymic (middle name, father's first name, and in this case, likely fabricated) is Yuri. (I think he can do worse than to be named after humanity's first astronaut! Nonetheless, we'll be changing his middle name to Jeffrey.)

This seems as good a time as any to mention a bit about the history of this city. It was founded in the early-middle 1600s by Cossack serfs fleeing the brutality of their aristocratic Russian masters. They dug in along the riverbanks where it was easy to get at water and use the land for resources. The city remained in Russian borders until the Revolution began. At this time, Lenin had difficulties defeating the White Army in these parts. He enlisted the aid of the Kazak people with the promise that he would give Uralsk to them if they were successful. They were, and he did. And his successor (Stalin) promptly pumped the entire country full of ethnic Russians.

But this of course makes it even funnier that today I must go to a Russian city in a half muslim-Asian country to find an English-owned hotel (remembering that the English are stereotypically not exactly known for their fine cuisine) to find the best Italian-style pizza I have ever eaten. Figures. Now I know where all the good English cooks went!

But getting back to Alex today, I changed my first poopy diaper this afternoon. It wasn't a big deal, really. It doesn't amaze me at all that they pump mashed potatoes and meat into one end of this pipe and what comes out the other end is about the consistency of...mashed potatoes and meat. He really liked being cleaned off. I mean, he *giggled* while I did this! If he makes diaper-changing this much fun, who am I to complain?

On the other hand, he likes pork.
Dina says:

Alex was in an exceptionally good mood today. When we went to go pick him up, he was clad in only a diaper. Why are (semi)-naked babies so cute?! He seemed pleased to see us, and we got him changed into his outfit for the day. We played in the sports room in the morning and, surprisingly, I wasn’t not as hot as I usually am. We introduced a new toy to Alex today and he loved it! It is a set of six plush blocks, about 4 inches on each side. They have a hole through the middle, and a little toy animal fits inside. Alex loved playing with (chewing on) the little toys and pulling them out of each block. He surprised us when he tried to put the toy back in each hole. He wasn’t totally coordinated, but we were impressed that he was attempting to do it. We don’t know much about how babies develop, but it seems early to be doing something like that. He was just so much fun today. It barely took anything to make him giggle, and we had fun playing with him. He fell asleep in my arms again today in the afternoon. I love staring at his beautiful little face when he sleeps. Actually, I love staring at his beautiful little face ALL the time. As you all may have noticed, his eyes are so amazing, but his mouth is so cute, too. I think he knows how to give kisses now. We’ve been kissing him so much, it doesn’t surprise me. I’ll say, “give mama a kiss?” and he’ll open his mouth wide, lean in, and lay a slobbery kiss on my cheek. He seems to think this is very amusing. I think it makes my heart melt!

Today has felt the hottest out of all the days we’ve been here. It felt like it was almost 100 degrees today. Actually, I just checked the weather on Yahoo, and it was 97 as of 4:00PM. It will stay warm for the next couple of days, then they are forecasting thunderstorms at the end of the week. For those of you who know me well, I’m terrified of lightning and thunder. Let’s just pray that they aren’t severe.

In between visits today, we felt like staying cool, so we had Philippich drop us off at the Chagala. Assia joined us and we enjoyed lunch and air-conditioning while watching tennis and basketball in the Olympics. We stayed there until 1:45, and Philippich took us back to the baby house from there.

In the afternoon, we met with Alex’s doctor, Dr. Alfira (last name was too hard to remember). There really wasn’t a whole lot new that we learned. He doesn’t have any allergies to food or medications and has not had many colds. He hasn’t had the chicken pox yet. As expected, he is a bit behind developmentally, but this is very common when a child starts out in an orphanage. He will catch up in no time once we get home. She was a kind woman and we enjoyed having the chance to speak with her.

After our second visit, we did some quick errands. We exchanged money so that we can buy our return tickets to Almaty. We decided to pay a bit more and get business class on the way back. We figure with a baby, it will be much nicer to have the extra room. We also get an extra 10 kilos of luggage allowance, so some of the money will be made up that way. It’s hard to believe that our time in Uralsk is coming to a close. Time is going by fast, and that’s a good sign that we’ve been enjoying ourselves. We will miss the people here; we’ve formed some very nice friendships. Then we went to the market and we also were able to find some more Cola Light and the brand of orange juice that we like. We needed more peanut butter and when we walked up to the counter, the girl recognized us and immediately got us a container off the shelf for us!

It’s 5:30 in the evening now, and this is much earlier than I usually make my update. I’m not sure what we’re doing for dinner tonight. Perhaps we’ll go with John and Sue to the Golden Cat and have some shashleek. It’s within walking distance, but we’ll see if Jeff is up to it. He’s feeling a bit better today, his allergies have really been hitting him hard. He’s napping right now, and we’ll touch base with the Scheblers in a half hour or so.

I hope you are all doing well, and I can’t wait to read your messages to us!

Addendum: We just got back from a very fun evening at the Golden Cat with the Scheblers and the Holms (I finally found out their last name!). I had beef stroganoff and it was dahlicious. Tomorrow night, Lance and Nicole (Holm) will experience Kamelot for the first time. A great time will be had by all.

Addendum addendum: How come we aren’t getting as many comments recently? Is anybody out there? *wink* I’m planning to make this into a scrapbook for Alex to enjoy when he’s older. All of the comments that you all make will be included, so don’t be shy.

What a nice posting Dina!! I loved the news about Alex which re-affirmed by belief that he is the smartest child there is. It is half way point now for your trip. The Time is going quick and the day of meeting my beloved grandson is approaching. I dreaming of the the first days here. My idea, to make it easy for Alex, to avoid overwhelming the child with so many people here at home, I volunteer to be the only one to hold him for the first week!! (Just thinking of him, really :-). Keep up your journal as I wait for it very anxiously.

We did not go to Church yesterday, but I know that in the Sunday bulletin at Ressurection, there was an update item about you and your trip; they put your website address as well. I don't know who put it, but I thought it was very nice. Give each other my love and kiss the little guy for me. Love you.

Dina, I totally agree with you on Alex's eyes and his mouth. I love baby mouths and his is an especially cute one.

I think your Alex is a bright baby....a bit behind developmentaly but still able to work on gettig those blocks in the holes?!?!?! I think he is very bright!

This site makes me so wish I was one of the family so I can see how he developes through the years. Hopefully you two will keep on the LJ so I can. :)

It is funny how "close" you get with people you have never met. I tell my friends about you three like we live next door! :)

I'll have to start writing in my LJ a bit more so you can get to know me. :)

Keep posting the pictures... very lovely!

Hi Dina, Jeff and Alex! Dina, it sounds like Alex is right on with his congnitive developement. He understands the concept of putting and taking out the toys from the hole, he just doesn't have the physical skills yet. That will develop real quick once he gets home!

It is hard to believe you'll be home soon. In some ways it feels like you've been gone forever, in other ways it feels like you just left. I'm hoping the time goes quickly from now until I get to meet Alex!

Isn't it so cute when they start giving kisses!! One thing I have realized (3 kids later :) is that they(babies)are much more aware, smart, and able to communicate than I thought. Its no coincidence that he opens his little adorable, drooling mouth when you ask for a kiss - he is showing his love for you (by the example you've shown him repeatedly!!) How cool that one of the first things he has learned from you guys is how to give affection!! Thats a pretty good sign of how things are going!!

Jeddo ~ mitts off!!! I get to hold him for the first week!!! Didn't I already volunteer for that? I want one of those slobbery kisses!

O.K. Enough exclamation points. Honest, I'll share like a good girl ~ maybe ... and it'll only be a pyrrhic victory. See ~ I'm edjumacated, too.

Hey, Jeff ~ how about trying your readers out on words like frideraterger, cumbubber, and, of course, noonies? As a matter of fact, we could work up an entire dictionary for Alex, and you could start teaching him to speak properly! (Oops, another exclamation point snuck it's way in ~ which reminds me also that I collected another extraneous apostrophe for our collection: this one was outside of a photography studio, and it said Wedding's. But why, I don't know.)

I must say, all three of you have looked as though you were perspiring a bit about the brow the last few days. Apparently, K-land doesn't have airconditioning??? I'm so sorry; it must be quite uncomfortable. I know on a hot and humid day (like today, for instance) I'd much rather be at work than out shopping or taking a nap at home. :-) Maybe Alex was in a good mood because they neglected to bundle him up.

Everyone here (Cupertino) is so excited about your website, but I notice not too many are leaving comments. They just pass them along to me ~ but lots of people are enjoying this. I'll check back later for more comments and stuff.

I'm so glad things are staying so great for y'all. I feel so redundant when I come in here!

Oh, by the way, Chris and Carey are currently "pushing"... but of course, only Carey's pushes are all that important. Just thought y'all would want to know. :)

Alex is a beautiful baby! And you two are great writers! I've been trying to catch up on everything you've written, but it's hard to do. I'm cruisin' along riding the cyberwave of information as long as I can (uh huh dude, spoken like a stereotypical Californian). Jeff you crack me up. You've got to start writing books. Dina, you are thorough yet to the point. Maybe you should edit Jeff's book :^)

Continued blessings to all of you...

Still no Fumble baby... it's been a long day for Carey. :(

Dina,
I just looked at your pictures for today. Alex's doctor was Avery's doctor! I wonder if at some point they were in the same group together. Would you please ask Assia to ask the doctor if she remembers Avery (Antonina) for us?
Thanks so much!

Melanie... Honestly, I told Dina that if I were doing this site over, I'd have it randomly pick which one of our entries it displays first every time a page gets loaded. I don't like being first all the time, but am not sure I'd like being second all the time either. Randomness would solve the problem.

Secondly, if you have any contact with Chris, don't let him know that our adoption process has only taken a year. I don't want to jinx anything.

...I mean for them.

Fascinating history of the city. Actually, I find Russian / central Asian history fascinating in general. In high school and college, I read a fair amount of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky in my spare time (never for a class though). Very interesting culture. I am just very happy for you and Dina to have such a blessing enter your lives. God is so wonderful. Take care, and hope the Schnitzel was good today (today currently being the 24th). :-)

Looks like there is no shortage of comments today. Alex is getting cuter and cuter every day. It looks like he is getting more and more comfortable with you guys each day. I do enjoy the pictures and your journal entries. It keeps you close even though you are far away. I can't believe you are preparing to leave already. It seems like you just got there. It is nice that you made some friends there. It makes the time go by faster. Looking forward to your return.

I love the baby pictures and look forward to them every day. The best ones are with Momma and Daddy. Aren't baby kisses wonderful? As I watch the Olympics on TV I always look to see how The USA and Greece are doing. Now I watch to see if there is anything about the Kazaks too. Interesting comments you wrote about about the country, too.

Hi, I love seeing the photos you post... Your journal is a welcomed site here. Things are busy now, school starts tomorrow.

Alex looks so cute in all his little outfits. Glad to hear how he plays with his new toy. If you show him what goes in where, he will probably remember and try harder to fit things in the right space. He seems to have a great attention span. When you are holding him, it may be fun to point out the routine things in the room. The light, the switch, when you get home show him how the switch turns the light on and off. He'll get it, point out his body parts, and colors. Pretty soon he'll be pointing them out to you. Sounds funny, but my children ate it up, they loved it and I believe it set a good basis for learning... It's just another way of stimulating their mind....

I am glad your stay has been so wonderful. I love hearing about your visits with your son. I can see a difference in his expression from his earlier photos. He "knows" you. It did not take long, did it.

Also, it is also fun to make slight variations with your mouth, stick out your tongue, etc. Alex will most likely model your expression. (no Jeff, nothing too complicated.)
This always amazed Louis and me.

Very excited to meet Alex. Loved the first family photo you sent. Still expressing my desire to sit for Alex. I am sure you have many sitters a waiting, but I do have a location advantage, and an early childhood development degree too. Will that give me an edge?? (Although I do not remember much about early childhood development....)

Again, We are happy for you and hold you and yours in our prayers.
